Block Nesting Rules

Not all blocks can contain other blocks. Understanding these rules helps avoid frustration:

Container Blocks (Can Hold Other Blocks)

  • Columns - Each column can contain any block EXCEPT other columns

  • Slideshow - Each slide can contain various content blocks

  • Toggle Group - Each toggle can contain text and media blocks

Content Blocks (Cannot Hold Other Blocks)

  • Paragraph - Text only

  • Heading - Text only

  • Quote - Text only

  • Image - Single image only

  • Button - Text and link only

Important Restrictions

  • No nested columns - You cannot place a Columns block inside another column

  • Group blocks are fixed - Card Groups, Testimonial Groups have predefined internal structure

  • Some blocks can't have other nested blocks - Columns, testomonial groups, slider groups, toggle lists and tables all have limitations for what blocks can be nested within them.

If you aren't seeing a block to add when you're working inside of a column or table - for example - it's likely due to the block nesting rules that exist.

Troubleshooting

"Can't find a block type"

  • Some blocks have been consolidated (e.g., Heading covers H1 and H2)

  • Template variables and AI blocks are under Advanced Personalization

"Block looks different on mobile"

  • Use mobile preview button

  • Adjust column layouts

  • Test responsive behavior

"Can't move block"

  • Ensure you're hovering correctly

  • Some blocks can't be reordered

  • Try cut and paste instead

"Can't add block inside another"

  • Check the Block Nesting Rules above

  • Some blocks don't accept children

  • Try adding to a different container
